Kurikawa Shoten Handheld Fan (Uchiwa)
This fan uses a bamboo frame that were made in the early Showa period (1920s-1950s). This was the peak period for the production of the Raimi fan. Every house in the town was involved in making fans, and there were many craftspeople. The frame was then covered with Japanese paper and finished with starch paste potato starch, the same method used in those days, to enhance the texture and rigidity. It was then coated with persimmon(Kaki) tannin to make it durable for over a hundred years.
It is said that the first Uchiwa was made in 1600 by a traveling monk in Marugame, Shikoku, who taught the Uchiwa making method to the monks in repayment for lodging.
Applying persimmon tannin to Uchiwa paper makes it strong and durable, and also serves as an insect repellent. Kuritami Shibu Fans, which are only made in Kuritami, Kumamoto, are believed to bring prosperity to business because it means "the people will come" and have been used as gifts as good luck charms.
Along with Kyoto and Marugame, Kurikawa Shoten is the only workshop that has inherited the tradition of Kurumin Uchiwa, one of the three major Uchiwa production areas.
Shibu fans are durable and long-lasting, and our customers have been impressed with them as gifts and souvenirs for baby birthdays, anniversaries, wedding favors, company anniversaries, etc.
