From Y. & SONS Original Collection
Woven by Nishimura Orimono, the oldest weaving house of Hakata-ori, founded in 1861.
The motifs in this piece is called "Arabesque Chintz with Phoenix"
It is said that the phoenix is the king of the hundred birds, a legendary bird that lives in paulownia trees and eats bamboo nuts. The male is called Feng, and the female, Huang. They are commonly found in art and textiles as they represent peace, tranquility, and longevity.
This obi consists of many fascinating techniques.
(1) It is woven with the traditional Hakata-ori technique.
(2) There are more warp threads than usual called "uke tate" or "floating warps" are used throughout. Enabling more detailed imagery.
(3) The combination of three types of weaves (flat, twill, and basket) gives the obi a fantastic finish with a slight sheen and incomparable stiffness.
